Sustainability
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC MAC
In Pope Francis’ encyclical on ecology and care for God’s creation which was addressed to every person on the planet “because we all share a common home - the earth” he focussed on a number of important themes including:
- A Moral and Spiritual Challenge. The ecological crisis, Pope Francis writes, is a summons to profound interior conversion - to renew our relationships with God, one another, and the created world.
- Care for God’s Creation. God created the world and entrusted it to us as a gift. Now we have the responsibility to care for and protect it and all people, who are part of creation. Protecting human dignity is strongly linked to care for creation.
- We are All Connected. We are connected to the rest of the human family, to the created world, and to those who will come after us in future generations.
The Holy Cross Catholic MAC is committed to caring for the planet and responding to the Pope’s call to action. The Holy Cross Catholic MAC aspires to care for God’s Planet by becoming a leader in sustainability and environmental protection.
Through the teaching of the Catholic Social Principles and the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals, we want to motivate all of our students, staff, visitors and community to follow a forward-thinking approach towards protecting our environment - for now and for future generations. Our aim is to reach carbon neutrality by 2030 and to encourage all our pupils, staff and their families and communities to continue to follow this sustainable focus outside our school grounds.
These efforts aim to nurture a more sustainable community and prepare students to tackle environmental challenges. We are working with the following organisations:

CLIMATE ACTION PLANS
Here you will find each school’s individual Climate Action Plans, a tailored roadmap that outlines how each school will reduce environmental impact and tackle climate change. These plans set clear targets, identify actions to lower energy use, cut emissions, and save resources like water, and monitor progress over time. By guiding decision-making and engaging staff, students, and the wider school community, each plan drives practical, measurable change toward a more sustainable and resilient school environment.
DECARBONISATION
At The Holy Cross Catholic MAC, we are committed to tackling climate change through practical, measurable action. As part of this commitment, we have worked with Eco-Schools’ Count Your Carbon programme and Let’s Go Zero to calculate the Trust’s carbon footprint across all our schools. These assessments provide a clear understanding of where our emissions come from and allow us to focus our efforts on the areas where we can make the biggest impact. Using this data, we are identifying practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint, from energy efficiency and sustainable travel to water and waste management, ensuring that our schools play an active role in building a greener, more sustainable future.
GREEN FLAG ECO SCHOOLS
Each of our schools has proudly achieved their Green Flag Award through the Eco-Schools Green Flag programme, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. This award recognises the hard work of students, staff, and the wider school community in taking practical actions to improve their local environment, reduce waste, save energy and water, and promote biodiversity. By following the Eco-Schools framework, each school has embedded sustainability into everyday learning and decision-making, creating lasting positive impacts for both the school and the wider community.
Feedback included, ‘Our team has been astounded by your amazing application. Our only concern is that we might not have been able to express in words just how impressed and grateful we are to have educators who go so far above and beyond to engage young people in environmental action. Congratulations on your Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction.’
EDUCATION NATURE PARKS
Education Nature Parks provide exciting opportunities for students to explore the natural world beyond the classroom. Through hands-on activities, guided walks, and interactive learning, pupils can discover local wildlife, understand ecosystems, and learn how to care for the environment. These sessions encourage curiosity, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation of nature while supporting the school’s commitment to sustainability and outdoor learning.
We are using the National Education Nature Park’s mapping tool to map and monitor biodiversity across both school sites, allowing us to track wildlife, habitats, and ecological changes over time. Across all our schools, staff and students are actively involved in projects to increase biodiversity, creating new habitats and microhabitats such as wildflower areas, hedgerows, insect hotels, and ponds. By working collaboratively across our sites, we are fostering a network of green spaces that not only enhance learning and wellbeing but also contribute to the protection and restoration of local ecosystems, ensuring that our schools are living examples of environmental stewardship.
MAC EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS
The Holy Cross Catholic MAC actively promotes sustainability through a range of events and initiatives throughout the year. Regular meetings bring together staff, students, and sustainability leads from across all schools to share ideas, review progress, and plan new actions. Throughout the year, we host themed events and activities that engage pupils in environmental projects, from tree planting and recycling drives to energy-saving challenges. These efforts culminate in end-of-year celebrations, where achievements in sustainability are recognised, and students and staff are celebrated for their contributions to creating greener, more sustainable school communities.
